A Legacy Cast In STONE

Bataung Memorials is Africa’s leading tombstone, plaque, statues and monuments manufacturer.

Lebohang W. Khitsane

Throughout his 22 years in the business world, Lebohang W. Khitsane has exhibited all the traits of a phenomenal entrepreneur. Identifying business opportunities, founding companies and revolutionising industries with innovative ideas are his signature moves.

Since matriculating in 1993, Khitsane has started the following businesses:

  • Lebo’s Printers – a printing company in Germiston, Gauteng (1994)
  • Khitsane Fashions – an importer of clothing from Germany (2001)
  • Bataung Memorials – a manufacturer of tombstones, plaques, statues and monuments (2004)
  • Khitsane Investments – a property development company (2007)
  • JL Lounge – an upmarket club in Ekurhuleni (2008)
  • Bataung Financial Services – a funeral insurance provider

·          Bataung GraveCare – provides ongoing tending and maintenance of gravesites

·          Bataung Memorials International – the international arm of Bataung Memorials

·          Hunter’s Batsumi

·          Jacob’s Bridge – an online portal to the country’s best-quality providers of funeral-related products and services (2015)

While he has since sold some of these companies, Khitsane is still director of Khitsane Investments, Bataung Memorials, Bataung Financial Services, Bataung GraveCare, Bataung Memorial International, Hunter’s Batsumi and Jacob’s Bridge. In 2014 Khitsane bought out Bataung Memorial Tombstones’ major competitor, West Hyper Tombstones.

Khitsane has enhanced his natural flair for business with a New Manager’s Programme qualification (NQF 6), followed by a Management Advancement Programme (NQF 8) qualification, both awarded by Wits Business School.

In 2012 Khitsane’s business acumen earned him the title of runner-up of SABC 2 reality show, The Big Break. His task was to start a business with a capital investment of just R1 000. He exceeded expectations when he made R78 000 within 48 hours.

Khitsane pioneered QR code functionality for funerals in 2013. His product, BMT Legacy Cloud,

provides directions to the grave site, as well as access to online archives of photos documenting the deceased’s life, where messages of condolence to loved ones can also be posted. Khitsane continued to pioneer the possibilities that the internet offers the funeral services industry when he developed the Jacob’s Bridge facility.

Community upliftment is a priority for Khitsane. His philanthropical activities include funding university studies for underprivileged young adults, providing around 1 000 families with food hampers every December, hosting events for the elderly, supporting orphanages, donating tombstones and funeral funding to the underprivileged.

Khitsane also sponsors students at various universities, and supports young entrepreneurs by mentoring them and providing them with business opportunities.
